Gooseneck Hitch FAQs

A Gooseneck Hitch is designed for use in a pickup truck similar to a Fifth Wheel.

The difference is that the Gooseneck uses a ball and coupler instead of a kingpin and pin receiver. Typically, the trailers that are most commonly used for this type of Gooseneck Hitch is a horse trailer.

What else do I need?

Most of these items are optional equipment to suit your needs. The rail kit is a must have item for a Gooseneck Hitch as that is how you attach the hitch. The Brake Controller and the wiring are also essential items for proper towing with a Gooseneck Hitch.

Brake Controller - There are three types - Proportional, Inertia and Timed. Basically all three types allow you to apply measured pressure to the trailer brakes and are controlled from the pickup brakes.

Chain Bracket Kit - Provides secure attachment for trailer safety chains.

Gooseneck Trailer Wiring - This allows for easy hookup of the trailer wiring to the cab wiring.

Common Terms for Goosenecks

Installation Templates - These allow you to figure out and mark where the plate which sits in the pickup bed will go and where to drill through the bed for attachment to the under bed rail kit. Used with the Fold Down and Remov-A-Ball models.

Rail Kits - The rail kit is secured to the inside or under the pickup bed to attach the Gooseneck Hitch solidly in the pickup bed.

Louvered Tailgate - This replaces the regular tailgate and creates a notch for the trailer to connect to the Gooseneck Hitch while still having a tailgate in place.
